Dr. Greene`s Answer:
When ringworm is treated with an appropriate antifungal medication, such as Lotrimin, improvement is usually seen within 7 to 10 days. Treat it for at least one week following the clearing of the rash to make sure that all of the fungus is gone.
If the condition does not go away with 4 weeks of treatment, then it was probably not ringworm in the first place.
Many other skin conditions look similar enough to ringworm (ringworm look-alikes) for the diagnosis to be commonly confused.
Ringworm Look-Alikes: Granuloma
Granuloma annulare is a common skin condition with raised, flesh-colored bumps that appear in a ring. It may occur on any part of the body (though most commonly on the sides or backs of the hands or feet) and is most often localized to one area. The bumps may be red at the beginning, but this disappears as the ring forms. There is no itching or scaling. The rings vary in size from about 1/4 inch to 2 inches in diameter.
No one knows for certain what causes granuloma annulare. It is not an infection and is not contagious. I believe it is probably a slow hypersensitivity reaction that some individuals develop to different types of minor trauma. It may, however, be related somehow to diabetes and thyroid disease. Most children with granuloma annulare are healthy and don’t go on to develop diabetes or thyroid problems, but these do occur more commonly in people who form these rings than in those who don’t, especially if the rash is widespread.
Granuloma annulare usually disappears spontaneously within several months of appearing (though it can take years). In almost half of cases the ring comes back for a while, usually at the original site. Sometimes localized lesions may respond to topical steroid ointments. When lesions are widespread, some physicians recommend treating this condition with steroid injections, freezing treatments (cryotherapy), UV light therapy or even stronger medications. All of these treatments may have side effects, so a thorough discussion with your doctor is needed before pursuing any form of treatment. Since the ring is usually not bothersome, and usually disappears on its own, I do not routinely recommend treatment. Often these rings will disappear following a small injection of sterile saline, so if treatment is chosen, I would consider this simple, safe method.
Ringworm Look-Alikes: Nummular Eczema
Nummular eczema is another common skin condition that is often mistaken for ringworm. The word nummular comes from the Latin word “coin,” and this rash is named so because it is a coin-shaped patch of dry, scaly skin. Itching is variable, and some people also describe a burning-like sensation. Common triggers for development of nummular eczema include medications, dry or damaged skin, bug bites, and contact with metals like nickel. Nummular eczema is aggravated by bathing, soaps, and irritants such as wool. Treatment involves limited bathing, generous use of alcohol-free moisturizers, and topical steroid creams. This can keep the patch under control, but it is not unusual for the condition to flare up again at the original site.
Occasionally patches of nummular eczema disappear when someone is taking an antibiotic for some other reason. Bacteria can invade the skin in these dry, scaly areas. If a patch of nummular eczema is stubborn, try treating with an antibiotic ointment.
Ringworm Look-Alikes: A Host of Less Common Culprits
Other conditions that occasionally look like ringworm include seborrhea, psoriasis, pityriasis, contact dermatitis (such as poison oak), drug reactions, tinea versicolor, vitiligo, erythema migrans (a rash seen in Lyme disease), and even lupus. Your physician can differentiate these from ringworm by a skin scraping or biopsy, if necessary.
Your question, Kyra, touches on an issue of profound importance. The take-home lesson is that a “feedback loop” is a critical part of your relationship with a doctor. When a doctor looks at a raised ring on the skin (or any condition), it is appropriate to make the most likely diagnosis based on the available information (and any testing that might be indicated). If things don’t improve as expected, make sure to tell your doctor, so that this new information can be used in setting a course from here.
This living cycle of observation and reevaluation allows the most accurate insight into the mysterious workings of Jerimie’s unique body. Whatever issues arise with his health, let your experience with this ring remind you to keep the loop connected.

Look up Pityriasis Rosea! My son has the same thing! It is wild. No rhyme or reason. He had his first outbreak in pre-k he is now 7 and having his second. They dont know much about it, however cortisone cream and sun light has helped. Not contagious and takes forever to go away!

Good morning! My husband has had dozens of small, red, raised rings on his outer thighs and buttocks appear in just two days. He says that they do not itch. I initially thought that he has Ringworm but there are so many of them and they are all 1/2″ or smaller. I have always associated Ringworm with a single large ring… Could this be Ringworm or possibly something else? As a retired Biology teacher, I’ve already spent hours researching his symptoms and cannot find a satisfactory diagnosis. Please advise at your earliest convenience and thank you in advance for your time.

After having my second child I have had consistent stomach bloating problems, constipation ongoing, skin sores with string like things (poking out at he edges of the sore, that can actually retract), when wearing skin masks, squiggly trails disperse from the sores & area directly surrounding, I’ve never seen or experienced anything like this before. I get blurred vision when these sores wheep & they do seem to want to spread, when doing so tiny individual strings branch out, turning into many before forming another sore ( i can see this because, being irritated by the movement, obtained an enlarging mirror to get a better look & was almost fascinated by what I saw, multiple times over. On some parts of my face & neck I have what appears to look like white pigment spots, however over time or in heat I assume, they blister slightly to reveal one of those stringy things. I’m always lethargic now, I feel like a freak at times & previous to this I ran my own company, basically alway high achiever with modelling background, very healthy until this. I’ve had every skin condition under the sun relayed to me of what the doctors think, yet in five years thousands of dollars, embarrassment etc etc nothing has resolved my problem- however I purchased ivermectin on line & this seems to clear up most symptoms, most definitely 90% better than doctors have prescribed. And now I’ve been placed in the “too hard” basket, because gps etc don’t want to deal with it at all. So it leaves me in exactly the same position.
Can someone help me please,
Yours sincerely

I hear your concern. I can’t answer that over the internet. I think it would be smart to ask your doctor at an in-person visit so she can look at the skin and possibly take a sample of the skin to send to the lab.

Someone is missing the boat on ringworm like rashes initially forming around the armpits. While granuloma annulare makes you close, there is far more concern that should be noted.
First, “erythema annulare centrifugum” can be related to 11 different malignancy conditions, including 8 which are Agent Orange presumed cancers notated by by the VA. While considered a rare condition, 1 in 100,000 ring rash cases, it is evidenced by this very article that even experts are not aware of this conditions possible consequences. And, if you don’t know what it is… how the hell can you diagnose it?
Mine, I believe, started with a flash rash on my thighs in late 2006. About five months later rings began to form around my armpits. Then the rings progressed down both arms to hit inner biceps, forearms just below the elbow, and the inside of the wrists.
My VA primary care physician diagnosed me as having simple eczema. I may only be a high school graduate, but I certainly can recognize a systemic problem like this when I see it! I bypassed further VA Montana services and went back to my old dermatologist (a Stanford grad) at VA Ft. Ord (part of the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System). He took a biopsy. The biopsy came back “suspected” for another condition called “mycosis fungoides.” That’s the fancy terminology for T-Cell Lymphoma of the Skin! The reason it was only suspected was because the cell structure wasn’t sufficient for an outright diagnosis.
Biopsies were taken over the next year and a half at VA Denver without resolution because VA Montana refused to let me travel to Stanford University’s world renown “mycosis fungoides” clinic for treatment… even though VA Palo Alto was willing to pick up the $1000 per visit consults. Travel from Montana would have been $300 to fly to San Francisco, while VA Montana paid $680 for each of my driving trips to Denver. (Just to shown you how the government works!)
Anyway, in September of 2006 I was diagnosed with full blown prostate cancer. Gleeson 3+4, too advanced for prostatechtomy. (sp?) And pay attention now(!)… PSA of only 2.6.
In December of 2008, I went through radioactive seed implantation of the prostate – a procedure called “brachytherapy.”
About 4 months later (April 2009) I was again back at Denver for another biopsy. After the taking, the doctor took my arm to walk me down the hall for a dressing. Along the way I said, “Ya know, Doc… I don’t think you people have the faintest idea as to what you’re doing!” You’ve been taking pieces of me for a year and a half and you can’t even tell me what the circles are!”
The doctor (an intern) replied, “Oh! That’s just EAC! (Erythema Annulare Centrifugum) You’re allergic to blue cheese!”
She flat stopped me in my tracks! “That’s B.S! There’s no way I’m allegic to blue cheese. I’ve consumed it my entire life! What else causes this EAC?
She replies, “Well I don’t know! We learn that it’s an allegic reaction to blue cheese!”
Not I am really ticked! “Doc, before I leave this hospital today we’re going to know everything there is to know about this EAC!”
She says, “Let’s dress your wound first and then we’ll look it up on the computer.”
Well! Aside from the 11 malignancies that EAC can be associated with, and the 8 within those 11 that are Agent Orange presumed conditions, it turns out that EAC is a differential condition to (wait for it!)……. “mycosis fungoides!”
in 2011 the VA cut my compensation from 100% to 20% on the basis that my prostate cancer was getting better. This, while the EAC continued to travel down my belly to my legs and ankles. Then I filed a Form 9 (?) Notice of disagreement to which the local benefits section raised me to 40%. I filed another Form 9 after being raised only to 40% claiming the EAC as a secondary condition to the prostate cancer.
Too late for me though. Under massive debt I was forced to charge bills to credit cards to save my fifty year + home in Santa Cruz, CA. which I had been using for rental income.
In 2013, my PSA zoomed to 3.95 over a six month period. My EAC was out of control. Since I was now on SSI and had Medicare, I went to an outside provider, who said the brachytherapy had failed, the cancer was no longer incapsulated in the prostate and was on the move. Where? He wouldn’t know until it landed. In other words, you could get prostate cancer in other organs, lymph nodes or the bones. So! I was put on the chemo drug Elegard, politely regarded as “hormonal therapy.”
The layman term is “chemical castration!” Reasoning was simple. Prostate cancer feeds off testosterone. Stop testosterone production and the cancer doesn’t
Finally, in 2014, I was heard by the VA Court of Appeals; and in June (?) of 2015 was awarded EAC, Secondary to Prostate Cancer – Docket #1019952. However, please note: I also asked for “specific performance” in that the VA make and distribute an EAC paper or Video that would be required learning by all PCP’s (VA Primary Care Physicians), VA Dermatologists, VA Urologists, and blood drawing lab techs. VA just ignored that request.
I have also filed for compensation dating back to the first occurrence of the EAC, with negligence by VA as not recognizing the condition. One would think when 8 presumed Agent Orange cancers are causes of the EAC condition that someone in VA would know it when they see it!
I was heard two weeks ago by the VA Court of Appeals in a “Priority Appeal” hearing. The docket number is: Docket # 1652305. The response to that appeal should come forthwith.
And a special note to you, Doc! I took pictures along the way. I offer them to you free of charge should you like to use them for an article on EAC. It is high time the masses learn of this condition!
Also, feel free to edit my post. I am killing two birds with one stone by also sending this letter to tapatalk – a Veteran’s website.
I thank you!

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment. While this is a site (and this article) addresses kids health, we’re glad you point out other conditions that, though rare, are important in the VA population, and especially those vets who were exposed to Agent Orange — something people who served in Vietnam between 1962 and 1975 should assume.

I have several of these reddish round blotches on my arm that have darker edges. Not itchy and not raised. But they are unsightly and only appear on one of my arms. The center is pale looking and I thought there were small white spots in the center. Not sure. I have hashimotos which is an auto immune disease and thought maybe it could be related to that?

For about 6 weeks, I have been dealing with what I initially took for ringworm and started off as a few small noticeable bumps/rings and have kinda spread across my face, under, eyes, cheeks, beard. They’ve grown and become smoother in the middle and red and raised on the outer edges. Appearing to go away only for other to be showing up. The itching comes and goes but I have seen a Doctor and I was prescribed terbinafine tablets and cortico steroid cream. That was 2 weeks ago and it only appears to be more small circular ringworm looking spots that appear to grow and become outer edged and thin to make lines across my face where they appear as a border to almost connecting. Kinda red blotches where they’re noticeable from my normal skin tone. It has now spread to my back and chest with the same circular small looking rings that itch and grow. It looks like a fungus but every home remedy in the book I tried, before consulting a physician only to still not see any real progress with medication. My blood was tested and the only thing odd was higher levels of white blood cells. My head has been somewhat itchy through the process but has become more intense recently and I expect it has spread more through my scalp. My next step is a derm, however any helpful information from anyone would be appreciated.

Saxxon,
Almost 40 years ago at 19 years old I had something that sounds just like what you are describing. It was a ring on the front of my thigh. The doctor diagnosed ringworm/fungus. The prescribed cream worked a little but the ring only got bigger and bigger. A doctor took a biopsy and the results showed it was not fungus. I was told to treat it for eczema. I did and not only did it get worse but small red bumps popped out all over my body. I continued to use a cream for eczema and all the bumps got bigger and bigger. After a few months I looked like I had leprosy. I went to a fourth doctor that said it was ring worm. I wasn’t convinced because I had a small chunk of my leg taken for a biopsy months earlier. He scraped every bump-there were about 30. When he came back from the lab, he confirmed it was the worst case of ringworm he had ever seen. He brought all the students from the lab to see what they had looked at under the microscope. He put me on an oral fungal medication. After a month it looked some better. At two months it looked gone but he said I had to take another month to keep it from coming back. I had it for almost a year and had been to 4 or 5 different doctors who couldn’t figure it out. The fungal infection was in my blood stream. Only the oral meds could cure it. It was called Gris Peg but I think it’s called something else today. It turns out ringworm thrives o fungal infections. 😑Good luck. I know how frustrating it can be.

I have been treating skin problem all over my body for 50 days. They look like classic ringworms, and they respond favorably to garlic application, and terbinafine 250 that a couple of doctors prescribed for me, but they don’d prevent new ones popping up.
Recently a dermatologist’s scraped a couple of lesions and looked under microscope, and found no fungus, so she thinks that it might be just hives, but my questions are:
Why they look so much like ringworms? why did they respond favorably to garlic and terbinafine?
I have seen four doctors so far, but they seem to be unsure. Sometimes, I feel like I have to make executive decision in this confusing situation.
I have taken Terbinafine for 4 weeks , and I have weak case of “ringworm lookalike” My burning question now is whether to take terbinafine 2 more weeks just in case it is ringworm after all.
Thank you very much.

I have three rings on the back of my neck and they all vary in size. They are all below one another, the biggest on the top. They do not itch, in fact, I didn’t know they existed until my barber pointed it out; and then other people began to mention it.
I’ve had it, as far as I know for a couple of months now. It went from one, to as I said before, three. In the beginning, I scratched at them, just because they were foreign to my body, so I messed with it. I scratched to the point where a fluid came out and it scabbed up, but as the skin healed, it came back with it. It isn’t contagious either. Neither my girlfriend, nor my son have caught it and it didn’t spread into my fingers or hands from touching.
Any idea what this could possibly be?

My 22 year old son has same round spots on his neck. No pain or itch. Not contractable. It could be diabetes related but my son has had normal blood sugar levels. He is over weight. I’ll try hydrocortisone again. Should I get a biopsy scrapping to see what it could be?

My little brother is experiencing a two ring like rashes that look nothing like ringworm. I thought it was granuloma annular but I did further research and it seems it only occurs in women ages 30-40. I am thirteen and my brother is 9. His rash looks nothing like eczema or anything you mentioned. I’m worried it’s serious. Please get back to me soon. He is in pain. Thank you

Dr. Alan Greene
Elise, I appreciate your concern and initiative for your brother. I wouldn’t rule out granuloma annulare just because of his age and gender.
Granuloma annulare (GA) is pretty common and can affect both children and adults. Widespread GA is more common in people over 30, but the more common type, with just a few ring-like rashes, is more common in children and young adults.
And GA is more common in girls/women – but not that much more common. About 20% of cases are in guys.
So GA still sounds like a real possibility for your brother. If so, it will often go away with little or no treatment.
But I’m a big fan of having someone skilled look at unknown rashes – especially ones that are uncomfortable. I hope it works for someone to examine your brother.

I have red itchy bumps on my arms, legs, and back of my hands, and sometimes on my fingers as well. They’re very itchy and they come and go. Whenever one fades, another one forms in another part of my body. My skin also turned dark as the itchiness subsides. The bumps also look so muck like an insect bite.
I really want to know what kind of skin condition I have. Can anybody tell me what it is?

Hi Dr. Greene, I’m 22 and I have has Eczema as all as I can remember. Well I have it on my back shoulder. My legs, my neck. Everywhere.. anyways my step sister is a nurse and saw my rashes and sent a picture to her derm. Doc. I haven’t been to one in year though. A free months ago a spot on my one arm showed up where I don’t have eczema at all. And it stayed. I put location on it like I do every other spot. My Eczema sometimes gets so bad it keeps me up at night. Well My step sisters doc said it looks like ringworm but I know it isn’t because if I was my boyfriend would have been affected a long time ago with it but now I’m freaking out because I’m thinking that certain spot on my arm is ringworm when it’s probably not.

I have seen 2-3 ringworm like red patches on the back of my neck. They are flat, circular and non- itchy. I don’t how long I’ve had them since they’re unnoticeable but not for more than a couple months. I haven’t gone to see a doctor yet but I wanted to know if it’s possible to have ringworm without itching?
Added:
Cheryl Greene
Hi Kashish,
Thanks for writing in. Here’s what Dr. Greene says, “The classic ringworm rash begins as a dry, raised, round patch, which may be slightly red. The patch may also be somewhat itchy.” The “may be somewhat itchy” indicates that it’s not necessarily itchy.
I hope that helps.
Best, @MsGreene

I have had what was diagnosed as ringworm since mid-November. I have seen both my doctor and his nurse-practioner and they prescribed ointments. The “ringworm” wasn’t going away so I went to a dermatologist who did a skin scraping. She said it was fungus and prescribed a stronger ointment. It still hasn’t gone away. It isn’t itchy. It was on the back of my hand and then two new spots on my finger came out. What would you recommend. I have an appointment with the dermatologist on February 5. My last appointment she said they may need to do a biopsy. Thank you.

Sounds like the fungus diagnosis is a step in the right direction. Perhaps you can get a stronger antifungal from your doctor? There are even antifungal pills. Maybe you could ask your doctor what she thinks of those?

I think everyone on here should be tested for tick borne pathogens, since all sorts of rashes occur with them. EM is just one manifestation. A full western blot is the test, and it is best to go to Igenex or Medical Diagnostic Labs. Skip the ELISA and ask for a full western blot. Herpes viruses reactivate with lyme, so that would be a good secondary test. Many people who have lyme show up with common variable immune deficiency and opportunistic fungal infections then show up as well.

I don’t have any and I also babysit another 7 year old and a 1year who doesn’t have any could it be something other than ring worm
Added:

Hi Kelly – there are ringworm look-alikes, as mentioned in this article. But sometimes with ringworm there is still fungus left after the visible rash is gone, so the rash springs back up after stopping the anti-fungal cream. Continuing for at least several days after it looks recovered will often prevent this. It typically takes at least a week of treatment to completely eradicate the fungus. Sometimes two or even three weeks. Best – DrGreene

I have had something that looks similar to ringworm for 4 or 5 years now. It has never spread to my 2 previous boyfriends. It appears sporadically, it had started on my legs and has moved all the way up to my face, but still appears everywhere else. The biggest a spot has gotten is slightly bigger than a quarter. I am fairly certain it is not a fungus because I was given steroid cream and told that if it is a fungus the cream would make it grow and spread, which it did not do.
What might it be?

Hi,
1) I have a nail fungal infection in my right hand little finger. After taking terbinafine for long time. After proper nail forming, i stopped the medication. But now again it has started getting green from one corner of the nail.
2) Got heavy fungal infection in thighs and random on other body parts. Medication was done for long time following by cap. itraconazole, cream ketoconazole, liquid luliconazole. That helped to removed the infection. But as the medication was stopped it started again in low activity following by scaly skin on bumps. In hands also ring like patches comes and goes.
Pissed off with this problem, Please help.

It came back for the second time last year. I used herbal cream, then stopped using it. With time it disappeared. It came back again this year, and it became itchy whenever I’m feeling hot, it seemed to be disappearing, but the circles just increased in size. Is it a bad sign, Dr Green?

it is not pityriasis rosea if it has lasted for over a year. the typical case will disappear within 3-5 months.
I have exactly what Ashley described too.
doctor told me it was “probably some sort of fungal infection” like ringworm and I HATE that she was so non-specific about it. she gave me over the counter clotrimazole too.
I’ve had an oval-ish, small red ring on my lower left stomach for over 9 months. I then noticed many smaller, more brownish circular rings ALL over my legs about 5 months ago (4 months later). at the same time I also noticed about 10 smaller red oval rings going up my back. one of them (on my hip) is particularly large compared to the others- it’s the size of a pencil eraser while the rest of them are smaller, more like the size that a hole punch cuts out of paper. I can’t really tell but they seem to be fading a bit recently?? its too soon to know for sure though.
still have no idea what I have. I’ve also considered lupis,Tinea Corporis, Granuloma Annulare, …………
…….and Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis looks particularly similar.
I also have noticed that my boyfriend has yet to show any skin rings whatsoever (which means it’s not ringworm, because ringworm is contagious via skin to skin contact, and I once unknowingly had him help me put clotrimazole cream on my back rings with his bare hands and he’s fine) and we have been dating for 1 year and 3 months longer than I’ve had the first ring.
I’m still at a loss. well, Ashley, lemme know if you ever found out what you had or may still have.

Hi Dr.Greene,I have a raised round reddish spot on my back, middle spine area, about nickel size round, kinda oval now, and I have a smaller one on the front of my left shoulder, the center of them are kinda concave, any ideas???
Added:
Cassie
Did the lesion on the mid spine appear first? It may be a condition called pityriasis rosea. This usually starts as one larger “herald” patch followed by appearance of smaller satellite patches. This condition often resembles ringworm, but it is common for lesions to range from circular to oval shaped and it’s usually seen on the trunk. If it is pityriasis rosea, there’s not much to do in terms of treatment. This tends the run its course and resolve on its own after several weeks. In the meantime, be sure to practice good dry skin care. Moisturize frequently with a bland moisturizer (creams more effective than lotions) and use gently fragrance-free body wash. avoid taking hot showers. If itching is a problem you can use otc hydrocortisone 1%, but do not use more than twice daily for two weeks as steroid medications come with risk of skin atrophy. If itch persists after two weeks you can still use the hydrocortisone cream but try to use it about 2-3 times per week to minimize this risk. Another safer otc option is Sarna sensitive. You can use regular Sarna, but it contains menthol and has more of a smell which some people don’t like. This cream is safe to use as often as desired.

But got another on right thigh about a year later it got six inches. Nothing helped it. It does itch and is red and raised. It too has almost faded but still a slight coloration ring but flattened out. I did have derm test some BOZO said it was Morphius. It is not. I got it when I was 44 after swimming in a lake and cut my hand on something sharp. I think it entered my blood stream then. I have had reoccurrence of this since 1993 to present. One on my left shoulder smaller, One occurred on my right elbow it is about half inch, another large along my right arm and elbow actually two. They are not contagious no one else gets it. I now have one on my right breast about 1 inch. The only thing that slightly slows it down is tree tea oil but not totally. I keep getting them and none in the same location. No one seems to know what it is. I have had them reoccur now at least one a year somewhere on my body since 1993 when got the first one. It bothers and sometimes it gets unbearably itchy and hot. Then I use tree tea oil which seems to help and slow it down but it never goes totally away and eventually reoccurs. I have no idea want it is and what it forever gone. Any clues or help?

My 9 year old son has been told he has had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics he was put on and was given an anti histamine that had sort of dissappeared until the next morning where it came back in more places and had changed to red spots which were in spots that were not there the previous day after another zertec it did not change or start to disipate but looks like it has gotten worse im at a wits end to exactly what it is

Felicity,
From your comment it sounds like your son’s doctor put him on antibiotics. After the reaction, has his doctor seen the rash? If not, sounds like another look would be in order. This may be a new reaction to the antibiotic.

Two doctors haave told me that I have either ring worm or a tick bite..the site was bullseye target looking thing! Anyways they decided to treat it as ring worm and gave me a prescription cream to put on twice a day. A week went by and it wasn’t getting that much better so I decided to go to a dermatologist. They could not determine what it is so they told me I needed to go off the cream for 10 days and have it scraped so they know exactly what it is. Does this mean it will get worse? Not really sure if I trust anyone at this point!! They also made me go for a blood test for lyme disease. It seems all so crazy..

Hello, every time I go to a hot country I get a small spot on my waist band. The spot is raised and itchy. In a few days it’s starts to grow in to a circular shape and increases in size. It tends to grow and move along my mid part of my body leaving pail flaky skin in its path. The rash tends to last 3 or 4 months. I’ve been to the doctors over the last 10 years with this and always get the same it’s ringworm put steroid cream on it that has no effect.

It’s a long shot, but maybe it’s shingles? Shingles is a virus, leftover from chicken pox, so steroid cream probably wouldn’t help much, but antiviral cream might. Shingles rashes often show up on the left or right side of the torso in the same recurring place and can get exacerbated from heat, and especially stress. Maybe check out some shingles photos for comparison. Good luck, ten years is a long time to suffer from something with no diagnosis.

Add 1 table spoon of bleach and 1 table spoon of bleach.
Mix together. Use a q tip dat on spots only.
Buy some virgin coconut oil. Put on toast, salad, or coffee etc.
Gradually add in your diet everyday. This will help internally. You can also eat beets, drink pompergrant juice…You need to eat food that purify the blood/liver everyday.
You can also add 1-2 cup of apple cider vingar to your bath.
Start gradually with one cup.
You will see your condition improve and go away.

Dr. Greene has written about intense itching in an article on hives. He says:
While you do not describe hives, your intense itching reminds me of the possibility of using an H1 and an H2 blocker together for greater impact than either of them alone. For some people it does the trick!

She will take antibiotics if it gets really bad. Usually she will apply Selson blue to her skin, as she was told to do so by Doctor, usually goes away w that. Selson blue is sold at your drug store in the shampoo isle (dandruff shampoo I believe). Give it a shot, may work for you! Don’t know if it’s the same white patches but it probably wouldn’t hurt to try. Good luck to your daughter.

My son used to get large hives. Turns out it was a food allergy. He would get hives that came and went all over his body from pineapple. And tomatos made him trun red.. Imagine how the day care reacted every time he ate pinapple and tomatos on the same day. I had to make sure they did not feed him either so I would get called to pick him up everytime he ate them… Anyway, check for a food allergy… Try tracking what you are eating and see if you notice a pattern. Hives are nothing to be concerned about, but knowing what causes it can help you to prevent them from occurring. Hope this helps.

Turns out we were both taking the same medication occasionally. There are types of auto immune rashes that come from an auto immune diseases but this type is unrelated to any type of disease. It just caused our body to attack itself. Insane itching.

But about 2 weeks later, it game back, bigger than ever and even more annoying. It itches sometimes, it stings sometimes, and sometimes it’s just extremely uncomfortable I can’t even sit correctly. My wife has ulcerative colitis and currently has infusions of remicade every 8 weeks, but has been on this medication for 18 months or so and her rashes have only recently surfaced. They look very similar to ringworm, and the doctor she saw diagnosed her with ringworm, however her medication prescribed to her hasn’t reduced the rashes at all over the past 2 weeks. The rashes started on her back and stomach and have since spread to nearly her entire body including her face. The big indicator to me that it is NOT ringworm is that she’s never itched. I think it is worth mentioning that I have not gotten any of her rashes even after skin to skin contact, so I don’t believe it is contagious. Thoughts?

I have a similar problem. When I was 16 I started getting these spots all over my body that looked exactly like ringworm, however they were not itchy and they never pussed. They were dry and flaky, very red and had a raised ring on the outside that sometimes looked green. They seemed to get worse in sun light, but they always went away on their own after a few months. When they healed they sometimes left a “white” spot on the skin where it seemed the pigment of skin was gone. I’m now 25, sometimes years go by without any spots, and then all of a sudden they’ll show up again. Sometimes it’s just one, and it’s never been more then 3 at a time. Hey hey,
So for about 2 weeks, I’ve had this circular (more oval) rash near my elbow. It started about the size of a pencil eraser, now its about 1 inch in diameter. Its completely red all the way across, bumps all through out it, but it only itches every now and then for a few minutes, then it kind of burns. If I scratch it, no matter how lightly, the skin breaks and its starts bleeding. I thought it was ringworm, but everything I read keeps telling me its not, usually its smooth and normal in the middle, but this is just bumpy and dry skin all throughout. Too lazy to go and get it looked at, so maybe the internet can help? :D

My 7 year old started developing ring shaped rashes on all his body about a year ago. The rash usually starts as a red itchy plaque which then becomes a red ring and spreads on the entire body in few days. He becomes covered with itchy red circles, a litlle protruding. The rash take 3-4 weeks to clear by itself. The 1st episode occured a year ago. The dermatologist said it was a kind of eczema due to weather changes and dryness. He gave him some topical creams (dermovate and tacrolims) and told me to make sure he takes short showers and be well moisturized with lipikar cream When the second episode occured 3 months later, i only used the lipikar as i felt the other creams wern’t very helpful. He is konw having his 4th rash in 1 year and i still don’t know what he has. I think the speed at which the circles spread on his body doesn’t look like eczema.

Chemo started and rash didnt bother me so I didn’t pay much attention to it. I then got rash on other shin, it is now just spreading across my lower legs. It has changed the pigment of my skin to white with a brownish red pattern around it. When it begins its slightly raised red patch, it does not itch, it has not spread to any family members. I was then put on ketoconazole for 2 months with no improvement. The rash gets redder with exercise and really gets redwith exposure to sunlight. I do have hip and knee pain and my fingers hurt real bad when exposed to cold. ( thought this was from chemo). I have recently started having seriously flushing of the cheeks to where I look like a clown witoo much makeup on! Tthought this was from stress of new job??? I have recently been diagnosed with an Autoimmune Disease. Although I am not a doctor I have done a TON of research on all my symptoms. Obviously, I can not tell you what you have – I would simply be guessing. You sound pretty classic for a Mixed Connective Tissue Disease – not sure which one or could be a combo. What I can say is that I HIGHLY (and I can’t stress this enough) recommend you go see a Rheumatologist. One from a major city hospital – not some suburban Doc. Trust me – wasted my time there!
Good luck in your quest for answers. Just know that AI disorders often take time to fully ‘present’ themselves and therefore a diagnosis is not easy to get – even IF you find the right and qualified Doctor! In your case, I suspect a really good panel of bloodwork might provide some answers; think like 16 vials! (And that was just one of 4 series of multi vial draws!)

About a week ago I noticed one spot on my leg that looks like ring worm. It does not itch and never bothers me, it’s just the fact that it’s there that scares me. Today I found 3 more on the other leg that are much smaller, again they don’t bother me. I’ve looked up everything I can and have myself freaked out a little. Diabetes runs in my family so I thought it could be granuloma annulare or ringworm – but they don’t itch, they are not raised or scaly, they are just there. I’m afraid to go to the doctor because most likely they are going to give me an anti-fungal and treat it as ringworm and that’s probably not what it is or charge me a lot to do some skin tests, or give me bad news, what I don’t know won’t hurt me. What should I do?

I am not a doctor At All, but have you gone to a doctor and explained all of those symptoms like you did just here?
I’ve been trying to figure out my own medical condition over the past couple of months. I’ve done a lot of research on lupus and it shares a lot of the symptoms you just posted. It could be ANYTHING and I am NOT a doctor so please do not read to much into this.
The symptoms that jumped out to me were the hip/back pain, the rash everywhere (especially on the face) and the sensation in your hands and feet in the cold. I have Renauds syndrome, and that for whatever reason is common accompaniment to lupus.
I don’t know anything about lupus other than the symptoms I listed above and that there are several different type of lupus- all extremely manageable with treatment.
Again, it could just be eczema and a mattress, but it can’t hurt to rule it out. Good luck!

When I was 13 I developed what we thought was ring worm, had just a few spots. Next day, I was covered from head to toe. I saw a dr and was treated with a cream which did nothing. As they went away, they scarred my body. They just come and go. I then proceeded to see a dermatologist who scraped it and said it came out positive for ring worm. Gave me another cream. Still hasn’t worked. I’m 21 years old now and I’m getting them worse than ever. They do not itch. They literally burn. They’re ring shaped and they’re very scaly. They do scar most of the time after they “go away”. Wondering if it would be anything else ? They get irritated by anything that touches it. And they’re EVERYWHERE.

I’m 28. I recently started a new job and moved into a new house. The new job definitely has a mold growing in the basement, which causes me to break out in hives and itch. I don’t go down there without benedryl. My new house is old (1930) and required a lot of work. At some point in the springtime when we moved in I developed a small red rash, oblong shaped, about 2 inches long on my upper left thy, just an inch or so from my leg joint/pelvis. This turned into a grayish scaly thing and has not gone away. It has not spread, it does not itch. I’m currently pregnant, so a lot of treatments are not an option right now. My OB GYN doesn’t think it’s serious, but she also said I should ask a dermatoligst. I do have vitiligo, in small spots on my hands, genitals, face and underarms, which I developed after my first pregnancy. I don’t have time to go to yet another doctor appointment right now and was going to wait until I’m no longer pregnant when more treatment options are available. This article was very helpful, but I am not sure if I should put more effort into identifying it or just carry on with my life. I’m concerned it is either a reaction to mold or a Granuloma annulare. But would love some advice!

I would be concerned about living in a house with mold while pregnant. Have you had the house tested to find out what kind of mold it is?

Hi! I’m 19 years old and I’ve been battling this persistent rash since I was about 14 or 15. It looks like ring worm, but it doesn’t itch and is only slightly raised. It is disc-like and shows up in all different sizes. It is a few shades darker than my skin tone. It’s never dry or flaky, it’s just there. It goes away with calamine lotion and selsum blue, but always returns. I was just wondering what that might be because lately I’ve been having issues with fatigue, ankle pain, wrist pain, muscle soreness, horrible insomnia, daily head aches, brain fogginess, confusion, anxiety, heart palpitations that last for hours, itchy scalp, hair loss (not handfuls, but not noticeable), brown spots, swollen lymph nodes in my neck, nausea when I eat, diarrhea, night sweats, nail changes (started out as a tiny, raised, horizontal ridge across on all ten nails, now turning pale), periodically hot skin, and hives that just seem to appear out of no where. And it only occurs every so often, but my sweat sometimes smells strongly of urine. Also, my skin has been super sensitive to sunlight. I was in the sun for like 20 minutes yesterday, and I noticed a rash beginning to appear on my neck, chest, and arm. It wasn’t raised at all, but it burned and looked like a thousand tiny red spots covering my skin. I was wondering if that’s just anxiety and me being a hypochondriac, or if I should be worried.

I’m guessing with all these symptoms you’ve seen a doctor or several doctors. What does he / she or what do they say?

Brit, Hello, I as well have had every one of these issues! I recently have found out that I am hypothyroid. I’m not exactly sure if all of the symptoms are linked to thyroid, but some definitely are! So, your best bet would be to have your tsh, t3 & t4 tested. Good luck:)

My sister is 60 years old and started breaking out in different areas of her body with what looked like a ring worm with no itching or oozing about 4 years ago. It usually breaks out on her legs, arms and hands. She too is having problems with headaches, pain in her joints, and issues with fatigue, ankle pain, wrist pain, muscle soreness, horrible insomnia, daily head aches, brain fogginess, confusion, anxiety, heart palpitations, swollen lymph nodes in her neck, nausea, diarrhea, and night sweats too.
She is in so much pain that she cries and says she can’t take it anymore. The doctors have not been able to tell her what she has or how to treat it. If anyone one else has heard of this, please inform me so I can help her.

I was having the same issues. My doctors couldn’t tell me anything. Got a sleep study which was pretty much inconclusive. I finally went and saw a bio-identical hormone replacement specialist who said all my hormones were low causing insulin resistance and i also had alarmingly low iodine levels which of course you need for all of those things to function properly! Iodine deficiency can cause every single one of these symptoms. Needless to say i was treated for these things and am no longer suffering from these ailments! Good luck!

It sounds like a few things, Lupus and Fibromyalgia are two things that come to my mind. Because of all of the strange places you are hurting plus the insomnia and fatigue accompanied with sore muscles. All of these symptoms are present with fibromyalgia which I have had for 15 years. Also lupus has some of these symptoms. I have a friend who has both of these. She did not know for quite awhile that she had fibromyalgia until she heard me describe some of my symptoms. The Dr. Who treats her for Lupus diagnosed her Fibromyalgia. Needless to say she was not happy, . As for your rash you will have to see a Dr. I am having problems with something that looks exactly like ringworm, however I have type2 diabetes so I’m not sure if that is the culprit. I am treating it with an anti fungal cream, have only used it for three days. So I will have to wait and see.

My younger cousin recently went on vacation to Orlando and came back with these ringworm-like spots on her back and upper arms. She thinks it has something to do with the change in water used for bath or perhaps the pool. No one else on the trip has contracted these spots. It has been a week now and she complains of itching. Some are coin-sized while others are about the size of a pea. What’s wrong?

I’m 60 year old female in excellent physical shape…bicycle everywhere (no car) and bicycle recreationally around 100 miles/week. May have some mild type of auto immune condition (have +ANA) but no firm diagnosis or treatment. Mild hypothyrodism for years…use Levothyroid for this. Mother had severe RA but I have neg. Rheumatoid factor. So, I have had a mystery skin rash at belt line of abdomen left of midline for about 2 years. Well circumscribed, oval “ring”, pink, edges of “ring” about 3/4 cm , mostly clear in center, not itchy or scaly, about 20 cm (tranverse) x 8cm (longitudinal )size, not spreading outwards. Seems a little redder and more prominent after a hot shower. No change whatsoever with antifungal creams (prescibed by PCP for tinea corporis) or with hydrocortisine ointment (prescribed by dermatologist for contact dermatitis). Incidentally was using oral antifungals (terbinafine) for about 4 months to treat “fungal” infection in R index finger nail….unsuccessfully. Nail removed in the end because of chronic pain and inflammation in the surrounding flesh. No change in skin rash either so unlikely to be fungal right??
I am really curious about this rash; thoughts are erythema migrans but how long would this rash last after tick bite infecton…not 2 years surely? Perhaps skin manifestaion of SLE? Or is it granuloma annulare with no known cause or treatment. It’s not pretty but no one really sees it and it doesn’t bother me as long as I can be assurred it’s not a sign of some underlying condition of concern? Advice please.
Thanks, Lea

Have they biopsied it for dermatitis herpetiform? With other autoimmune conditions for you and family…it’s a possibility. It’s not a herpes virus at all–it’s the skin manifestation of celiac disease, another autoimmune condition that is also more common in people with autoimmune thyroid conditions.

Hello dr.
Just returned from dermatologist any my 21 month old has granuloma anulare on her ankle. You say and I quote below that “diabetes does occur more commonly in people who form these rings.”
“It may, however, be related somehow to diabetes. Most children with granuloma annulare are healthy and don’t go on to develop diabetes, but diabetes does occur more commonly in people who form these rings than in those who don’t.”
My question is what is the increased chance that she may go on to develop diabetes or is it a symptom of already having it?
Thank you,
Dee

Hi, I have acquired what at first my mother, father, an I thought was ringworm. It had happened shortly after getting my first job that a currently work, a food joint called Boston Market, and it started out as a small bumpy ring that I thought was a burn because it was red and later turned flesh colored so I ignored it for weeks and then I noticed that the ring was getting bigger an bigger. And now the ring is gone and the back of my hands and fingers are just a bunch of small flesh colored bumps that formed the ring. But the thing is that it’s not itchy unless near an open. Wound on the hand or near sensitive areas on the hand. It is also on the bottom of my wrist where you can see the veins but once again nothing really itches at all. I wanted to know if you had any idea what it could be.

I developed 3 spots in different areas that looked like ringworm. My dr did a bacteria culture and it came back negative. Waiting on the fungal culture. But one of the spots was crusty and oozing yellow liquid, would even soak through a bandaide. That one was hard under the skin and hurt and itched. The others scabbed a tiny bit and do it. Not sure what this could be and he put me on a Sulfur antibiotic and a ointment. One of the 2 seemed to dry the one spot up…but they all still itch. Other places itch but no spots. Was wondering if it was Tide too. Changed awhile back. But so confused.

It is so bad that I almost scratched a layer of my skin off trying to get it to stop. I am a 15 year old female and my mom is going out to get me ringworm cream just in case. I’m 27 and I started getting these last year. My first one started last year under my left arm. That has not gone away yet — the bumps are gone, I’m just left with a brown unshapely circle. Also, last year I got a few patches on the inside of my right thigh. Those were a little itchy and my thighs rubbing together didn’t make it any better. This year I have one on my lower left leg. This one has almost gone away. I have been a little heavier on the thick lotion. I didn’t use any types of ointment. However the ointment I was prescribed did work on the thigh region and that one hasn’t returned.

I used an antifungal cream assuming that’s what it was based off research and the n it started to go away. It finally seemed gone then for the past couple of months since them little red bumps keep coming back in the same spot, doesn’t make a circle they don’t itch or even have feeling but they come then go then come and go. Right now their back. I am super frustrated and my chiropractor did a muscle test over it said it was testing for yeast infection gave me natural stuff to take to kill it but it’s come back redder now. Please help me.

I have little sores that appear mostly on my backside and thighs, but sometimes it spreads in other areas too. It looks like ringworm but the ringworm treatments don’t help, in fact it aggravates it further and makes the sores bigger.
I tried using Aristocort ointment (which I use on my psoriasis) on them and it seems to work, but while it works, it leaves scarring once the sores heal. It’s very embarrassing because now I have small red spots (scarring) scattered on my body.
I still don’t know what the sores are, but I do presume they are some sort of psoriasis or eczema? They are scaly, sore and occasionally itchy. They also spread quite quickly, I have spots all over the place. New ones showing up every week or so.

Hi there, a few months ago my boyfriend noticed red rings on his chest, scalp and hip area. After going to the doctor and receiving a biopsy, he was told that he had ringworm. I am still unsure as to whether this could be ringworm… Him and I are together on a daily basis and no one who has been in contact with him, myself included, has had any symptoms. I have been told ringworm is highly contagious. Could this possibly be seborrheic dermatitis? He has been using prescribed medication since August, and much has cleared up with exception to the rashes on his scalp, which won’t seem to go away. Are there any more natural remedies that have worked previously for anyone else? I would love to hear feedback, thanks!

I feel like you kind of match what I have and I know the frustration. Back when i was 16 I developed a red oval-ish circular patch that is about 1.5 inch diameter and just to the left of my bellybutton. It can fade out from time to time, but you can always kind of see it. My skin will just sort of look discolored there. Whats more is that over time the red patch started to spread to random places on the left side of my abdomen (I’d say 5-6 patches in all now), all of them being smaller than the first patch. I got kind of worried when I saw them spreading like they were so I did some research and it looks like its just Pityriasis Rosea (http://www.skinsight.com/adult/pityriasisRosea.htm) which is harmless. But I am not a doctor so I am going to be asking my doctor anyway just in case it is a sign of something else.

Hi. My wife first noticed a rash on her left hip that looked like ringworm, but it wouldn’t go away. Soon, it started to spread to her buttocks and all down the back of her legs. There is a little irritation on her back and arms, but it is mostly her legs and buttocks. She went to a dermatologist and was initially told she might have Lupus. However, after a biopsy, it was determined that she didn’t have Lupus after all. She was prescribed Prednisone and given some topical steroids. Neither seemed to make much of an impact on her condition and she had been back to the dermatologist twice before being sent to an allergist. Ringworm was ruled out and nobody seems to know exactly what she has or how to treat it effectively. Her latest prescription is Levocetirizine.
There is cause for concern because this rash has lasted for nearly 5 months. Does anyone have any advice that could help? We’re not really sure where to go from here. Thanks.

I would love opinions on my photos below. For about 2 years, I have been back to the dermatologist. He took a scraping and just told me it’s not cancer.. not sure if he looked for anything else. He is quite sure it is either eczema or psoriasis. I asked him about ringworm but he said “no that’s not it” in his confident “I know more than you” voice so I didn’t bring it up again… I have tried several topical prescriptions for both eczema and psoriasis under his care. But the spots are only getting larger and spreading. right now the problem spots are all on my legs below the knee, though the first one I had was on my arm and it eventually went away (sun exposure?) Now that they are getting bigger they are starting to itch more (especially when covered) looking at photos of ringworm, it really looks like what I have. I don’t want to argue with my doctor, but whatever he is prescribing is not working and I am miserable. Please look at the photo and tell me what you think. I am thinking to try treatment at home for ringworm and see what happens. At this point, what could it hurt?

try using using mometasone furoate cream, .1% and ketoconazole 2%, i mixed them together and wow it killed the them with the first application, I used it from head to toe, works great, it doesnt stop the spreading but it quickly kills what you can see.

Hi Karen,
I think mine is psoriasis. it was getting really bad so I went back to the doctor. he suggested I go on an oral medication Methotrexate, that sounded pretty scary.. I would have to have my liver checked every week. yikes! I told him I didn’t want to start it until after the holidays. So, in the meantime he prescribed Halabetasol Proprionate (aka Ultravate) ointment.. which is a steroid… Well, after 2 weeks, the rash was gone. All that’s left now is some patchy coloring similar to odd tan lines. He now has me on a vitamin D ointment to prevent it from coming back. I still have had a couple spots pop up on my arms and back of my thigh, but if I put the ointment on them early, they go away in a matter of days. Hopefully I can wear shorts this summer! I hope you figure out what yours is.
